I believe that this downward spiral began in the late 1980s/early 1900s when the the christian right took over the GOP in a power grab and the GOP cowered. Of course the evangelical christians aren't able to see this co-option so they will disagree. What we are seeing now in the old adage of "give them enough rope and they will hang themselves."
