Why is everyone ignoring this?

I have written to several local blogs who purport to care about issues and people with the following:

Why have you not reported or commented on this?

Kind of a big deal I would think.

I have waited to see what you would do, and obviously you intend to write nothing...

Why might this be?

We will now see what their response is, and what their reasoning is, in ignoring such a horrendous event at a church, at a children's event...

And I would also ask why, the Daily News Record, the paper of note in the central Shenandoah Valley, made no mention of this event having taken place at all?

WTF????

Could someone please shed some light on this for me?

Unfortunately, the prevailing belief is that UUs are basically hippies who kinda like the idea of a God type figure. Folks believe that at UU services, everyone sits around in a circle, smokes pot, and bitches about the US...

But thats not true. And if folks would just go to a service, they would see that every single person is a friend. Even a complete stranger. UUs are amazing people, who will, in the end, forgive the man who tried to kill them all, understand that his mental capacity was off kilter, and attempt to heal the wounds caused by such a horrible act.

Mainstream America believes that if you ignore it, it will go away.

They're ignoring this story because it doesn't fit the view they find comfortable.
Liberals being killed because they are liberals? In a church? At a kid's program?
Next thing you know someone will try to say it doesn't matter because it isn't a "real" church or some such nonsense.
There will be excuses and I wouldn't be surprised to hear attacks on the UUs as somehow bringing this on themselves.

The entire story makes rightwingers squirm - who amongst them hasn't condemned "Liberals", "homosexuals", Muslims in terms that dehumanize?

How many rightwingers have a copy of "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder" by talking head Michael Savage as did this killer?

Which one of hateful wankers that post on the Republitarian do we need to be worried about?

Yup, the commentary (when there is any) seems to fall into one or more of the following types:

1) It's terrible and we condemn it, but really, what are UUs doing in a place like that?

2) It's their own fault for being a "soft target" (failing to arm themselves in preparation for such an event)

3) How dare anyone suggest that this deranged man's actions were in any way encouraged by explicit talk about doing violence to "liberals" and GLBT people (even as the same activists will insist, for example, that SpongeBob SquarePants has the power to "promote homosexuality.")

We saw a similar silence around the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints raid. All that compulsory marriage and misogyny was a little too close to home for some folks, I think.

We have a few posts about this, the most recent being:

We have people in that Church, good and dear friends. I'll tell you what won't be ignored - the terror of children as they watched their family members drop right in front of them. Several ran from the sanctuary and hid in the woods, unwilling to trust even those adults that tried to help. Most simply crawled under their pews hoping for salvation.

If they live 80 years they'll never forget this terrorism. And if we're lucky they'll find a way to forgive-this is a particularly tolerant denomination. But I don't expect that they'll ever mistake rightwing "free speech" as anything other than hate speech, anymore than my Uncle ever found virtue in the Japanese after what he witnessed on Okinawa.
