Mayor's Summit a Big Hit!

Working as a Community for Tomorrow!

Over 200 Individuals representing scores of businesses and groups and personal interests in community sustainability participated in this day long conference.

The morning began early for the organizers, 7:15am, and officially at 9:00am for participants whose interests ranged from energy production to energy conservation, from car pooling to buy local, from recycling to bicycling, from policy theory for the future to action items on how we can make a difference ourselves beginning that day...

Notable for their presence were Harrisonburg City Councilwoman Carolyn Frank and Councilman Richard Baugh who both greatly contributed to the conversation during breakout sessions along with Planning Commission member and Harrisonburg Democratic Chairman Alan Finks.

Also participating were Democratic Candidates for VA House of Delegates:
Erik Curren (20th District-Bridgewater, Staunton, Western Augusta and Highland),
Gene Hart (26th District-Harrisonburg and Northern Rockingham),
and campaign representatives for:
Greg Marrow (25th District-Eastern Rockingham and Augusta, Waynesboro and Western Albemarle),
and John Lesinski (15th District-Shenandoah, Page, Luray, Woodstock, Strasburg, and Rappahanock)

Notable for their absence and obvious lack of interest in such efforts toward community improvement and future planning were VA Senator Mark Obenshain and Valley Delegates Matt Lohr, Todd Gilbert, Chris Saxman, and Steve Landes...

The event was attended by environmentalists and economists, by landscape designers and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) architects and builders, by city and rural citizens, by professors, teachers and students, by young people of all ages, and by carpenters, plumbers, lawyers, farmers, homemakers and a garage door salesman.

This is how American Government is supposed to work.

Of the people, by the people, for the people.

Thanks to all who participated.

Lowell, you're notable only for your continued douchebaggery. The Dem candidates you cheerlead for were there for campaign purposes only...I doubt any of 'em gives a damn about the community or whatever was peddled there.

I look forward to each of your candidates losing in Nov; in the interim, I will fill up Lohr's campaign coffers as an ongoing thank you for him beating you. Haha...the voters rejected your crap, and I bet it still stings.

What a silly, uniformed comment by anonymous, but since we are going anonymous here goes. There were Republicans, Independents and Democrats at the Summit. People came from nearly all walks of life and I felt nearly everyone left more informed. We all can look forward to the day in the future when anonymous and his uncaring heroes no longer have the influence they have today. I am glad he made it clear that his group that wasn't there doesn't care at all. That definitely helps me cancel out his vote.

Why would they go to something that no doubt turned into a big 'ol campaign rally for Lowell's pals? If the Repubs attend an event and the Dems don't, that mean the Dems don't care about the topic of said event? And lots of people didn't go to the summit...that mean they don't care about the community?

Its a stupid criticism to make, but par for the course for Fulk and this blog.

Hey Anon! You ask,
"If the Repubs attend an event and the Dems don't, that mean the Dems don't care about the topic of said event?"
Question for youAnon,
What kind of event might that be? "Foot tapping in the airport bathroom"?
"Making the most of your page opportunity"?
"How to capture the pity vote"?
Something like that what you got in mindAnon?

I don't know, Anon...my guess is you're all too familiar with such meetings, particularly the foot tapping in the bathroom, so you would know better than I whether they were there.

Dems are famous for their meetings, though. Byrd had his with the Klan, Kennedy had his with an inquest looking into his suffocation of poor Mary Jo. Clinton had his under a desk with an intern, and former NJ Gov McGreevey had his a male state employee. And lets not forget John Edwards, who has a family for each one of the Americas he talked about during the campaign.

Saying Repubs were not interested is totally unfair. This summit conflicted with the repub convention!

Thank you George for reminding everyone that the current office holders care more about party and power than they do their community.

There were plenty of conservative minded people at the conference who actively took part with very well considered and progress oriented contributions to our conversations.
There just were no "elected" ones.

I'm guessing that these guys can verify that they were actually in Richmond for the weekend.
The Republican meeting is certainly more important than any podunk meeting of local goofballs hugging trees and licking frogs and sitting in a circle singing we are the world. What a bunch of losers.

It makes my heart break to see comments such as anon#1, George, and Drill Now act like they represent all Republicans, THEY DON"T. Thank you Anon#2 and Shari for reminding people that not all Republicans are as unaware and uncaring as the people above. Just remember this, If we keep this type of stupidity up we will never win Harrisonburg back and will cause us to continue to lose ground in Rockingham County, VA and the USA.
