Madison Cup Debates - Coal


We cordially invite you, your family and your friends to the James Madison University campus for the 2009 "James Madison Commemorative Debate and Citizen Forum," AKA "The Madison Cup Debates." The Madison Cup Debates take place in conjunction with our university's annual celebration of James Madison's birthday. This year the debates will take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2009.

This year's debate topic is:

Resolved: That coal based technologies, including "clean coal" technologies, should not be included in our nation's energy future.

Preliminary Debates: 8:30AM and 11:00AM Taylor Hall 4th Floor (there will be signs)

Championship Round: 5:00PM Wilson Hall Auditorium

Parking is free in the South Main St. Parking Garage across the street from "the Quad."

There will opportunities for audience floor speeches and comments. There will also be a prize for the best floor speech!

The undergraduate student debaters will be competing for the Madison Cup, and $15,000.00 in Scholarship prizes. The Madison Cup Debates continue to grow. Teams will be traveling from as far away as California. Last year's participants included: Johns Hopkins, Brown, Cornell, William and Mary, Yale, Richmond, Liberty, Mary Washington, and of course JMU-to name only a few.
