We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources.OPEC will continue to cut production until they achieve their desired 80-100. per barrel. The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. Oil is finite. We are using oil globally at the rate of 2X faster than new oil is being discovered. We need to take some of these billions in bail out bucks and bail ourselves out of our dependence on foreign oil. Jeff Wilson has a really good new book out called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence Now. He explores our uses of oil besides gasoline, our depletion, out reserves and stores as well as viable options to replace oil.Oil is finite, it will run out in the not too distant future. We need to be more proactive and educate ourselves and others. The historic high price of gas this past year did serious damage to our economy and society. WE should never allow others to have that much power over our economy again. I wish every member of congress would read this book too.

The Republican Party knows they are up the creek with out a paddle. Yet they look to Jindal, and Palin as their answers. Not that I would want to give good advice to the opposing team, but one of their best bets is Meghan McCain. Yes, the daughter of John McCain. She was recently quoted as saying "being a Republican is “about as edgy as Donny Osmond.”, and “…Where has our extreme thinking gotten us? President Bush will go down as one the least popular presidents in history." She also goes on to say Ann Coulter is offensive and insulting. She is the most level headed Republicans around. They all could take a lesson from her. Not that I wish them luck with renewing their party, but I do think she would be a better bet to secure their future (which is current young voters). They need level headed center-right winged activists, not the extreme conservative good ole boys of the classic Republican Party. If the future of the Republican Party is self serving, money driven, loud mouths such as Limbaugh and Coulter then more power to them. I'd love to see them in elected office having to actually LISTEN to constituents, and formulating policies.

Also, BeyondGreen is completely right. The recent hike in gas prices served as a double edged sword. For a brief moment Americans realized that we do not have control over the price of oil, but we do have the power to change the way we use foreign oil. We need to elect, and lobby our elected officials to vote on measures that will advance our use of renewable resources. This past session in our own General Assembly we saw too many good “Green” bills die in committee, not because the Republicans didn’t think they were good bills, but because they controlled the House. They certainly couldn’t allow a bill that would shed favorable light on a Dem pass. Who cares if it would be right for the Commonwealth, but that is a whole other story…. Unfortunately most Americans are only proactive when the problem hits (high gas prices) when it is too late. Mr. Wilson's book is well thought out, and offers just about every option that we can utilize to wean us off of our need to foreign oil. I know there are many problems that we are facing today, but investing in alternative, and renewable energy resources is the answer to so many of our problems (jobs, economy, environment, relations with Middle East).

youngdem, HOPEFULLY when you grow up you will realize that politics is serious business, it isn't the little popularity contest that your little high school or college democrat friends think it is. It isn't about "being edgy" or "hip." Only idiots vote some dumbass because he plays the saxophone or has a good jump shot. Meghan is too stupid to realise that she is a natural Democrat constituent--at least until she matures. If she ever does.

After Democrats got clobbered in past elections they didn't stop and say, Oh, we need to be more like the Republicans. They just keep being the extremist left wing liberals that they are, at least at the national level. They didn't listen to your or Meghan's advice to be more like the winning party.

Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are "offensive" to you only because other people have told you that they are. Try to put down "Das Kapital" or "Dreams of my Fathers" long to actually listen to Rush and read some of Coulter. Sure, little sensitive P.C. in every way youngdem might be "offended" but youngdem might actually learn something, too.

John Doe

I, although young, and NOT in high school, or college (having worked my way through both successfully) have never supported a candidate based on anything other than their stance on issues that are important to ME. I classify myself as a democrat mainly because I am very environmentally conscious, and believe that when the constitution says all people are created equal, it really does mean ALL people. I think that all American’s should have the right to healthcare, and too many people take advantage of the welfare system. I think that by providing more accessible higher education to all, that America can, and will one day be the global leader it should be. I think we need to abolish our need for oil from the Middle East, but fear we’re giving to much control of our destiny to China. I think teachers should be paid more, and the top 1% of earners who bring home over 23% of all income here in the US can afford to pay higher, because you can’t support a family on $6.50 an hour.

Mr. Limbaugh denies that we are in the middle of a climate crisis, and often feeds inaccurate facts to his easily persuaded listeners. I actually listen to him on regular basis, as do I watch FOX news. I did read Coulter’s “Slander”, and although I do not have any plans to read “Guilty” I do think she is incredibly intelligent and presents many logical ideas. I personally have a problem with adults who do not have manners. I will be the first to say it is somewhat disappointing how Obama won this past election (on hype, and not issues), and I will even agree that the media did play into the hype more than they credibly should have. I do think that this past election did give the Democratic Party an opportunity to involve newcomers, but this opportunity will only be beneficial if the newcomers are welcomed.

I applaud Meghan McCain for standing up to say ,even as the Republican party is in shambles (as we see first hand here in VA Del. Frederick), that they do not need to cling to loud mouth, celebrity conservatives who are out to make money for themselves and not the party they say they represent. I haven’t been around forever, but I feel the democratic party has been successful due to their ability to adapt with the times, and appeal to all in this melting pot we call America.
